Zip Files Action fully supports Unicode file names, large archives and can split archive into custom-sized volumes. Unicode filename support allows easily compressing files whose name contains symbols of non-western text (e.g., Chinese glyphs, Cyrillic characters, etc.).

Large archive support allows overcoming the limitations of older .zip file formats (such as maximum 4 Gb uncompressed file, compressed file and total file sizes as well as the maximum number of files in archive). With large archive support enable it is possible to compress virtually unlimited number of very large files.

Splitting archive into volumes is useful for storing an archive on multiple media such as CDs, DVDs, and flash drives.

Unicode filenames Unicode filename support allows compressing files with non-western characters in their name.
Large archive support Allows to compress large files and to create archives containing vast amounts of files with virtually unlimited size. If the Large archive support option is enabled, the Zip archive will not be compatible with applications that only support older Zip specification versions. However, unlike the legacy format, large archives are not limited to 2 GB size.
Split archive into volumes Automatically splits archive into multiple custom-sized volumes (volume size can vary from 65,536 to 2,147,483,647 bytes) to store large archives on a multiple smaller media or to easier recover from failure when sending archives over the internet. Only the Zip format supports splitting archive into volumes.

Notes

  • Unicode filenames are supported only by the Zip format. Gzip and Bzip2 archives do not contain filenames at all. Tar file format supports archiving files with the character set of Windows regional settings.
  • If the Large archive support option is not enabled, the Zip archive is compatible with applications that only support older Zip specification versions. As a drawback, the archive size is limited to 2 GB.
  • Tar file format supports archive sizes up to 8 GB or more.
